Tom Cruise's ‘The Mummy’ Reboot Synopsis Released

Universal Pictures has released the official synopsis of the upcoming reboot of The Mummy, which stars Mission Impossible actor Tom Cruise.

Below is the synopsis:

Thought safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient queen (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her, is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.
From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.

To be helmed by Alex Kurtzman from a script penned by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus), The Mummy will also star Annabelle Wallis (Knights of the Roundtable: King Arthur and Annabelle), Courtney B. Vance (American Crime Story: The People vs. OJ Simpson), and Jake Johnson (Jurassic World).

The Mummy is Universal's first installment of its new Monster cinematic universe in development, which also includes The Wolfman, The Invisible Man, Bride of Frankenstein, and Van Helsing. All aforementioned films are in various stages of development.

Classic monsters and monster films have been a hit in the past, but I'm not sure whether Universal's new project will attract a large audience considering comic book films are dominating the current film industry. Set in the modern day, I'm not sure how these classic monsters will turn up in the movies. Hopefully, Universal will give us something with films that have more depth than just stunning visual effects.

The Mummy is now in production in London, slated for release on June 9, 2017.
