Star Wars Legend Mark Hamill Names The Mandalorian the Best Way Forward for the Franchise

Star Wars: The Mandalorian was a major hit when it premiered on Disney+ last year. Not only did the series manage to earn strong buzz, it helped bring together the fractured Star Wars fanbase which suffered from divisive films like Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Now that the Skywalker saga has finally come to an end, Star Wars legend Mark Hamill names The Mandalorian as the future of the franchise.

Speaking in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Luke Skywalker star Mark Hamill discusses The Mandalorian and its role as the beacon of hope for Star Wars.

"I think they have a wonderful advantage on ‘The Mandalorian' in that it's economical storytelling," Hamill told the entertainment news outlet, "They don't have the burden of delivering a gigantic special effects extravaganza like the films had to do. It sort of gets back to the basics of George [Lucas] envisioning it as a western in space. It has that tone of a Sergio Leone Western. I'm very impressed with it and to me, a very smart move on their part because you can't keep trying to top…It's like the superhero movies that have to deliver these gargantuan epics. And with ‘The Mandalorian,' they can concentrate more on the characters and the storytelling. I think it's excellent."

Hamill isn't wrong. The Mandalorian has been an indubitable success for Disney – a reprieve from the struggle that the House of Mouse has had with recent Star Wars entries.

Right now there's a whole lot of excitement building up over the second season of The Mandalorian. Jon Favreau's hit Star Wars series is going to make a return on Disney+ this fall, and it seems like Disney has no intention to delay the second batch of episodes.

There isn't that much information about what Lucasfilm has planned for Mando (Pedro Pascal) and for Baby Yoda just yet, but there have been reports saying that Ahsoka Tano may join the series.

Star Wars: The Mandalorian season 1 is available for streaming on Disney+.
