Star Wars Comic Explains Why Mace Windu Has A Purple Lightsaber

Star Wars fans might know that George Lucas always wanted lightsabers to come in green, blue, or red, but in the prequel films, Samuel L. Jackson's Mace Windu got his own violet lightsaber. While we might chalk it off to the actor's insistence (Lucas was initially resistant to the idea of a purple lightsaber ) it turns out that there's a more in-depth explanation for the existence of the uniquely-colored lightsaber.

Screen Rant just recently dug up Mace Windu's lightsaber origin from an old Star Wars Tales comic story "Stones" and while the book rests in the Star Wars Expanded Universe, the story does give the purple lightsaber a unique background.

According to the story, Windu once had a vision of the lightsaber that he would build back when he was a Jedi initiate. However, Windu was unable to craft the lightsaber because he lacked the necessary parts. The Jedi initiate was then sent to planet Hurikane to look for these parts for his saber, but when he arrived, he was chased away by angry natives.

However, one of the natives fell into a canyon by accident and then shattered. Using the power of the Force, Windu reconstructed the native. As a result, the natives decided to gift him with a purple crystal, resulting in the purple lightsaber that would become his.

Though the story isn't canon, it certainly adds depth to Mace Windu's character and to his weapon. Maybe we'd get to see this story integrated into an Obi-Wan Kenobi spinoff, or a Mace Windu spinoff, who knows.
