Star Trek: Discovery might have taken the Star Trek franchise to new ground when it introduced the franchise's first gay couple, Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz) and Lt. Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp), into the series. However, the show also invited controversy when it decided to have Culber cruelly murdered.
In the first season of Discovery, Culber dies at the hands of Ash Tyler (Shazad Latif), the chief of security of USS Discovery snapping the doctor's neck after the emergence of his memories of his true life as the Klingon warrior Voq. Because of this, fans started accusing Discovery of burying its gays, a trope where gay couples aren't allowed to have a happily ever, instead of coming to a tragic end.
However, in a new interview with Attitude, actors Rapp and Cruz promise that this isn't entirely the end for Culber and Stamets.
"I can promise you that he really did have to go through that in order for us to tell the story that we're about to tell you," Cruz says. "We don't dismiss it. We don't act as if it didn't happen. We extrapolate it in a very real way. We extend the story. And there are consequences. There's a price to pay. But it's a really exciting way of learning about this character. Honestly, after doing it I feel like we couldn't have given a more satisfying answer to the question."
This isn't the first time that Cruz has hinted at the return of Culber in the next season of Discovery. The actor also teased the character's return during this year's San Diego Comic-Con, and while he didn't reveal the exact method of return for Culber, he did say that the character would make a comeback.
Let's cross our fingers and wait and see what CBS has prepared for us in the second season of Star: Trek Discovery.
