Quentin Tarantino Says There’s A “War For Movies” Between Original Cinema And Marvel, Star Wars

Martin Scorsese caused quite the ruckus last year when he revealed that he didn't think that Marvel movies ought to be considered "cinema." Calling the comic book film franchise an "amusement park," Scorsese incited quite a discussion on the definition of "real cinema" with Marvel fans defending the Marvel Cinematic Universe and others coming to Scorsese's side.

Now, it looks like another film auteur has decided to extend the conversation, declaring that 2019 was the war for movies.

Speaking in an interview with Deadline, critically-acclaimed director Quentin Tarantino discussed the push and pull between original auteur films and major blockbuster franchises like Marvel and Star Wars.

According to the filmmaker behind films like Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, Pulp Fiction, Django Unchained, and Inglourious Basterds, 2019 was a year where franchise movies were in direct opposition to smaller, artistic-leaning films.

"When you say, despite the sequels and the Avengers: Endgame and all of that, I actually think a war for movies got played out this last year," Tarantino told the entertainment news outlet.

The director explains how many believed that major blockbuster franchises would have taken over the Hollywood industry. Analysts thought that Marvel and Star Wars would be the future of cinema, pushing out smaller, original films.

"As far as I can see, the commercial product that is owned by the conglomerates, the projects everybody knows about and has in their DNA, whether it be the Marvel Comics, the Star Wars, Godzilla and James Bond, those films never had a better year than last year," Tarantino elaborated, "It would have been the year that their world domination would have been complete. But it kind of wasn't."

Despite the strength of all of the blockbuster releases, original movies came out strong last year, and Tarantino was proud that his film, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood was one of those nominated for awards.
