New Mutants Gets PG-13 Rating Instead Of Getting Rated R

It looks like 21st Century Fox's highly anticipated X-Men spinoff, the New Mutants, finally has an official rating.

According to a report by Cosmic Book News, the New Mutants has just received an official PG-13 rating because of its violent content, disturbing or bloody images, strong language, thematic elements, and suggestive material. The site suggests that the PG-13 rating might been given because the X-Men movie is being released by Disney as the Mickey Mouse House just recently acquired 21st Century Fox. Another reason behind the PG-13 rating could be the fact that Disney decided to use Josh Boone's version of the movie instead of what producer Simon Kinberg wanted for the comic book film.

While this might sound a bit disappointing to fans who always believed that the X-Men spinoff might get an R-rating because of its horror genre, a PG-13 rating will allow New Mutants a wider release. This means that the movie isn't going to have that much of a problem at the box office.

Sure, R-rated movies like Logan and Deadpool have proven that mature, gritty, and raunchy films can do well in a commercial stand point, however, Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) reminds everyone that the R-rating can also limit viewership and thus affect box office results.

At least New Mutants won't be too limited by an R-rating. The film might struggle if it would limit its viewership.

Besides, the PG-13 rating could mean that New Mutants might make it to Disney+, a streaming site which doesn't really offer anything rated R.

The New Mutants is set to premiere on April 3, 2020.
