Star Wars: The Last Jedi might have become one of the most divisive entries in the Star Wars franchise, but the commercially and critically successful follow-up to Star Wars: The Force Awakens also helped bring the sequel trilogy to new directions.
More traditional Star Wars fans might not appreciate where The Last Jedi has taken the franchise to, but Lucasfilm certainly has.
Speaking in an interview with Gizmodo to help promote the third and final entry in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy talks about how The Last Jedi helped Star Wars move forward.
During the discussion with the producer, Gizmodo talks about that pivotal scene in The Last Jedi where viewers get to see a young boy using the Force to grab a broom as he looks up at the sky with hope for the Resistance. The publication then asks Kennedy whether The Rise of Skywalker would present the same idea of what the Force "could come to be" in the future of the franchise.
"What the Force means lying ahead, I think isStar Wars. It certainly is a part of what Episode IX is. But the Force is a huge part of the conversation about where we're going and what is the future of Star Wars," the Lucasfilm President answered, "And once we move on from Episode IX and we start telling new stories, the force is the foundation of Star Wars."
The Last Jedi dissenters might have hated the film for supposedly subverting fan expectations and for "misusing" legacy characters like Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) but the film sure did add to the Force's lore.
We can't wait to see what direction the franchise is going to take after The Rise of Skywalker premieres on December 20, 2019.
