Lucasfilm is Trying to Fix One of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’s Major Mistakes

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker might have been one of the most highly anticipated films of 2019, however, the third and final entry in Disney's Star Wars sequel trilogy ended up becoming one of the most divisive films in the franchise.

Episode IX was strongly criticized for relying heavily on fan service instead of focusing on good storytelling. The film introduced a number of changes to established Star Wars lore introduced not only in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but in other Star Wars projects as well.

This includes Poe Dameron's (Oscar Isaac) origin. In the comics and novels published before The Rise of Skywalker, Poe was introduced as the son of two Resistance fighters who follows in his parents' footsteps after his mother's death. After joining the New Republic Defense Fleet, Poe goes on to join the Resistance.

It's an origin story that's supposed to be part of Star Wars canon, however, The Rise of Skywalker carves out a new story for Poe, revealing him to be a spice runner right before he joins the Resistance. This new origin for Poe is just one of the many mistakes made in Episode IX, and according to Showbiz Cheat Sheet, it seems like Lucasfilm is trying its best to cover it up by releasing a new novel called Poe Dameron: Free Fall.

The book which is set for future release details Poe's early years as a headstrong teenager – a character that feels more in line with the swagger that we get to see in the character in The Rise of Skywalker. Once Poe Dameron: Free Fall retcons Poe's story, then Lucasfilm will be able to fix the problems with Poe's backstory in Episode IX.

We can only wonder how Lucasfilm might try to fit in this "hotshot Poe" narrative with the origin that they already created for the character before The Rise of Skywalker.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will be available on Digital HD on March 31 and on DVD, Blu-Ray, and 4K Ultra HD on April 14.
