Lucasfilm Executive Tells Fans That Star Wars Canon 'Is All Fake Anyway'

Star Wars fans may busy themselves debating over the facts and figures that make up Star Wars canon, however, Lucasfilm executive Matt Martin wants to remind the fanbase that the narrative that makes up the Star Wars franchise are all made of fictional events and fictional characters.

While the Lucasfilm executive admits that the Star Wars group maintains a list of what makes up the franchise's canon so that the official storytelling remains aligned, Martin says that fans can choose to believe what they want out.

"So to summarize: there is a reason that we need to internally know what is and isn't canon so we can keep our line of official storytelling as aligned as possible but that doesn't mean fans can't individually pick and choose what they want to accept as true," Martin wrote on a post on Twitter.

It seems like the Lucasfilm honcho wants to make peace between warring Star Wars fans. The Star Wars fanbase has always been a passionate group, and over the years there have been so many heated debates about the films and the series in the franchise.

"If you choose to only accept the real official canon: cool. If you like to mix and match between continuities: cool. If you like to make up your own stories: also cool," the Star Wars executive added in a second tweet, "Fans generally put too much emphasis on what the company deems 'official.' If you like the animated version (I do!) then there's no reason to value it less just because it's 'not canon.' You know?"

Martin makes a pretty strong point. While Star Wars does have its list of what is and isn't canon, Star Wars fans can always choose to omit certain things for their own personal Star Wars narrative. They can even choose to omit entire films from their own personal canon by saying things like "To me, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker isn't part of the franchise." Official canon may exist, but it's always up to the fans whether they accept it or not.
