Hellboy Reboot Took Notes From Deadpool And Logan

Hellboy is making its big debut in a few weeks, and while the film is set to give a new take on the film franchise first established by Guillermo del Torro, the Unwilling Harbinger of the Apocalypse himself admits that the reboot took a few notes from other major comic book movies.

Speaking in an interview with JoBlo to help promote his upcoming film, Hellboy actor David Harbour decided to open up the reboot and the place the film has taken in terms of comic book movies. During his discussion with the publication, the Stranger Things star cites some of the darker and more violent entries in the comic book movie genre, saying that films like Logan and Deadpool were used as inspiration for the direction of Neil Marshall's Hellboy reboot.

"Whereas Aeschylus and Sophocles were maybe writing The Avengers movies, here you have Euripides coming in with this darker version of Elektra or something that is like nastier and gnarlier," Harbor explained. "And so when I read the script, that's what excited me, and it wasn't like those Marvel movies that we see. It was very different, but it had a very compelling story and it was very in line with the graphic novels that I had been introduced to in like, my early 20s. So it was a lot darker and it was a lot scarier than those superhero movies are in general that I see. Although, like again, there are exceptions. Certainly, Logan, even Deadpool and I mean, they're sort of are inspirations, there are Logan, Deadpool, and the Chris Nolan sort of Batman universe."

Of course, this isn't the first time that Harbour's talked about how dark and how strange Hellboy would be. The moment the project was announced, Millennium let fans know that the project would be much grittier than the original movies, explaining that the reboot would follow closely its comic book source material.

This excited fans, though some needed some time to warm up to the idea of having a new Hellboy movie without Del Toro and without original star Ron Perlman.

Hellboy premieres April 12, 2019.
