Disney Developing New Planet of the Apes Movie with Maze Runner Director

The Planet of the Apes film trilogy might have ended with The War for the Planet of the Apes directed by Matt Reeves, but now that 20th Century Fox is part of Disney, it looks like the studio is keen on developing a new movie for the Planet of the Apes franchise.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fox has just decided to bring on Maze Runner director Wes Ball to develop and direct a brand new Planet of the Apes movie. This is the first significant Fox franchise to see redevelopment after Disney acquired Fox earlier this year, beating out the X-Men's transition into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Though there hasn't been that much said about the Planet of the Apes, the last three films of the franchise has raked in $1.68 billion at the box office – a major win for Fox. The franchise has always been considered a sleeper hit, so it's no wonder that Disney would be interested in developing a new Planet of the Apes movie.

Ball is also a good selection to direct the new project. The Maze Runner trilogy managed to gain $1 billion worldwide even though the films were produced on modest budgets. Disney previously had Ball set for a big-budget and special effects-heavy live-action adaptation of Mouse Guard, a title by Boom! Comics. Unfortunately, the project was shelved. Now, Ball is being tasked to develop the new Planet of the Apes movie by Fox Disney.

The new Planet of the Apes movie has yet to receive a release date but we'll update everyone as soon as we get word.
