Could Wonder Woman 1984 be Hinting at a DCEU Reboot?

The DC Extended Universe might be enjoying success right now with films like Wonder Woman and Aquaman but the franchise had trouble getting on its feet with movies like Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League.

Now, it looks like Warner Brothers might be thinking of rebooting the franchise with Wonder Woman 1984. Empire Magazine recently wrote a detailed piece about Patty Jenkin's Wonder Woman sequel and in the article (via Cosmic Book News), the entertainment news outlet casts doubt on Warner Brothers considering Batman v Superman as part of the DCEU's canon.

The publication starts with a discussion about what's to come in the Wonder Woman sequel, talking about what Chris Pine's return really means, and whether Gal Gadot's Diana and Steve Trevor will have to part ways again in Wonder Woman 1984.

"...the biggest mystery of this film: Chris Pine is apparently back as Steve Trevor. In a shell suit. Is he a figment of her imagination? A clone or improbably similar-looking grand-nephew? Have the gods taken a hand in Diana's life and resurrected him? If the Batman v Superman canon counts anymore (and that is a big if)," the entertainment news outlet writes, "then this film will end with the pair parted once more. But maybe there is some path to happiness for them. If Steve Rogers got back to Peggy Carter, who's gonna stop Diana Prince?"

The line about Batman v. Superman no longer being part of the DCEU's slate of canon movies might sound like mere speculation, but Empire Magazine is an industry site with insider information. The publication may have caught wind about Warner Brother's plans for the superhero franchise.

Of course, things might change. We'll have to wait for actual confirmation from Warner Brothers before worrying needlessly about the DCEU.

DC's latest release, Joker, is currently screening in cinemas.
