Apple Announces Streaming Service Featuring Heavy Weights Like Steven Spielberg And JJ Abrams

It looks like everyone's joining the streaming game. Last year, Warner Brothers launched its own DC Universe to house content from its DC film, television, and comic franchises. This year, Disney is building up its own site called Disney+, preparing new series from both Lucasfilm and from Marvel Studios.

Now, Apple is throwing its name into the ring, announcing its plans to launch its very own TV streaming service in May. Titled Apple TV, the streaming service will be launched alongside the tech company's major update to its Apple TV App.

The announcement was made by Apple head Tim Cook at the Steve Jobs Theater during this week's Apple event (via ComicBook.com) which included appearances by popular names in the entertainment industry like Steven Spielberg, Jason Momoa, Steve Carrell, Jennifer Anniston, Reese Witherspoon, Alfred Woodard, Sara Bareilles, Oprah Winfrey, JJ Abrams, and even Big Bird.

According to Tim, Apple TV+ is going to be an ad-free paid subscription service featuring original content from the different creators gathered at the event as well as others who weren't able to attend.

"We're honored that the absolute best lineup of storytellers in the world — both in front of and behind the camera — are coming to Apple TV+," Apple's senior vice president of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue said in a press release. "We're thrilled to give viewers a sneak peek of Apple TV+ and cannot wait for them to tune in starting this fall. Apple TV+ will be home to some of the highest quality original storytelling that TV and movie lovers have seen yet."

Apple certainly has a lot of big names on its list. We can only wonder what kind of Spielberg or Abrams movies we'll get to see in Apple TV+. Though it's highly unlikely we'll get to see Abram's Star Wars films knowing that the license is owned by Disney, we're sure the directors' other projects are going to appear on the site.
