The Matrix Resurrections Synopsis Seemingly Removes Reloaded and Revolutions From Canon

Warner Bros. recently uploaded the first trailer for The Matrix Resurrections, giving us an early look at the return of Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity (Carrie Anne-Moss), and fans are quick to notice how the visual styles revealed in the trailer footage resemble the first The Matrix film, but will it also pay tribute to the sequels, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions?

Following the release of the first The Matrix Resurrections trailer, Warner Bros. has shared a new and fairly vague synopsis for the highly-anticipated sci-fi film, and the details of the synopsis suggest that the film will erase The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Resurrections from the franchise's canon.

The Matrix Resurrections is a continuation of the story established in the first MATRIX film. It reunites Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss as cinematic icons Neo & Trinity in an expansion of their story that ventures back into the Matrix and even deeper down the rabbit hole. A mind-bending new adventure with action and epic scale, it's set in a familiar yet even more provocative world where reality is more subjective than ever and all that's required to see the truth is to free your mind. 20 years after the first film, the franchise that helped define pop culture at the turn of the century is back for a continuation and extension of the original movie. The Matrix remains in the zeitgeist as a film that has changed the way we look at cinema and reality itself. With its game changing action and visual effects, The Matrix helped pave the way for films to follow.

First of all, the synopsis doesn't mention either The Matrix Reloaded or The Matrix Revolutions, while mentioning the first The Matrix film several times. It may be a bit of a stretch, but "continuation of the story established in the first MATRIX film," and the calling The Matrix Resurrections as a "continuation and extension of the original movie," seems to erase the sequels completely from canon.

Of course, this would mean that The Matrix Resurrections would pick up years after Neo first discovered he could fly, rather than following his death and ultimate sacrfice at the end of The Matrix Revolutions, so it's likely that the story will branch out into something unexpected.

The Matrix Resurrections is set to release in theaters and HBO Max on December 22, 2021.
