The Last Jedi’s Gwendoline Christie Wanted To Be In Star Wars Ever Since She Was Six

Star Wars fans were really excited to see Gwendoline Christie suit up as the chrometrooper Captain Phasma in Star Wars: The Force Awakens back in 2015, glad to see that the Game of Thrones star was getting a seemingly cool character in one of the biggest science fiction franchises in Hollywood history.

The British actress, of course, was much more excited for herself than her fans, telling AceShowbiz.com (via Indian Express) that she felt "unbelievable joy" being cast in the sequel trilogy installment, given the opportunity to live out a childhood dream.

"I can remember the precise moment I was cast as Captain Phasma in Star Wars. It was an explosion of unbelievable joy. For a long time, I had campaigned to be in the franchise to anyone who would listen," the actress explained.

Ever since she was six she was hoping that she'd play a role in Star Wars, saying that she "marvelled at this fantasy world in a way I couldn't yet articulate, with its misfits and droids and a woman who fought the enemy with intelligence, who was funny and refused to be shackled, the inimitable Princess Leia."

Her efforts did pay off, and Christie was given what fans were hoping to be a cool character similar to the iconic bounty hunter, Boba Fett.

"When I was taken to the top-secret wardrobe department to see my Captain Phasma costume – a shiny, full-body suit of armor – I was truly electrified. Kathleen Kennedy, president of LucasFilm, had asked me if I'd ever Googled ‘female superheroes' and proceeded to show me the results; a plethora of scantily clad, cartoon-like women and not a whole lot else," Christie shared.

Christie's Captain Phasma did gain a lot of interest before the release of The Force Awakens, but fans felt a bit underwhelmed because of how the film underused the character. Luckily, it seems like we'll get to see Captain Phasma in action in The Last Jedi.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits cinemas December 15, 2017.
