The Duke of Death and His Maid might not seem like much compared to anime giants of the season, but, it does what it does surprisingly well. Combining neo-Victorian gothic and fairytale aesthetics, humor, romance, and a healthy dose of angst, it manages to be a sweet story. But how many episodes is The Duke of Death and His Maid going to have?

First, a short overview for newcomers: The Duke of Death and His Maid airs weekly on Funimation, and it is based on a manga by Ikami Koharu. It tells the story of a young duke who got cursed by a witch so that any living being he touches, plant, animal, or human, dies immediately. The Duke's mother turns her back on him and exiles him to a faraway family property where he's cared for by his butler, Rob, and his maid, Alice.

The latter is the only childhood friend of the Duke's who is still happy to be near him, and she enjoys teasing him. Much of the anime is just about their day-to-day interactions, that range from hilarious, to heart-warming and, at times, tragic, since the two are hopelessly in love but can never touch unless the curse is broken.

The anime has been commented on for its aesthetics, and the romance is quite refreshing, as the two characters confess to each other very early on, as opposed to similar works whereby the main pair takes annoyingly long to admit their feelings. The drama comes mostly from the Duke's curse and other factors, thankfully avoiding miscommunications and other romance cliches, making for a wholesome relationship you can't help liking.

If you're here for all that, you might be sad to find out that the J. C. Staff anime will only run for a total of 12 episodes. Given the show's slow pace, it's safe to assume that the Duke's curse won't be lifted this season, especially since the manga is still ongoing, and already has 13 volumes.

This could mean two things; either a second season is on the table, or the anime is going to give its own ending, wrapping up the story very quickly. It's too early to know if there's a plan for additional episodes, but, thankfully, there's the manga to check out in the meantime.

Other great anime to watch this season include The Case Study of Vanitas and Spirit Chronicles.
