The Duke of Death and His Maid is based on a manga of the same name and follows a fairytale-like premise: a young man is cursed by a witch so that every living thing he touched withers and dies. Due to that, he comes to be known as Duke of Death, and his mother banishes him to a mansion where he won't be a threat to others.
The only person who cares about him is his maid, Alice. In Episode 1, Philip, a childhood friend of the Duke's, visits him, but the Duke's hopes of rekindling their relationship are shattered when it's revealed that Philip finds the curse scary and repulsive. In fact, Philip only ever visited because the Duke's mother prompted him to spy on her son, whom she plans to replace with his younger brother as heir.
The Duke is reasonably heartbroken, but the experience strengthens his resolution to break the curse so that he can one day start a romantic relationship with Alice, the only person who doesn't shun him.
