The 3 Shocking Twists George R.R. Martin Revealed to Game of Thrones Showrunners

Among the many things that Game of Thrones is famous for is its ability to shock audiences. It seems that no episode would be complete without featuring at least one surprising moment or at least one cliffhanger. The latest shocking scene that fans witnessed from Game of Thrones is from Sunday's hour titled The Door, where we saw Hodor's death and the reason why he can only speak one word.

This week, we learned via a new featurette how author George R.R. Martin revealed Hodor's story to Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. Well, as it turns out, that isn't the only stunner that the A Song of Ice and Fire novelist revealed to David Benioff and Dan Weiss.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Benioff and Weiss said that Martin told them about "three holy sh– moments" during an interview with the author Santa Fe two years ago.

The three shocking twists are as follows:

> Stannis Baratheon sacrificing Shireen in Season 5
> Hodor's origin story
> ...and the third... Benioff teased it's "…from the very end…" of the hit HBO series.

With Season 6 taking place after Martin's finished novels, fans are concerned over the series spoiling the books.

Benioff said:

People are talking about whether the books are going to be spoiled – and it's really not true.
So much of what we're doing diverges from the books at this point. And while there are certain key elements that will be the same, we're not going to talk so much about that – and I don't think George is either.
People are going to be very surprised when they read the books after the show. They're quite divergent in so many respects for the remainder of the show.

However, Benioff and Weiss have pointed out that the series will in no way spoil the books, but that it will have similarities to Martin's creation.

It really can't be helped. Game of Thrones IS based on Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novels. In any case, whether the series is spoiler free or not, I'm confident that one twist that the showrunners took care not to reveal will be one hell of a shocker. It's definitely something fans will patiently wait for and be excited about. Maybe that major pivotal moment could be this thoery of Bran warging into a dragon. It's certainly possible. At this point where Jon Snow has been resurrected, anything is literally possible in the Thrones world.

Game of Thrones airs on Sundays at 9 p.m. E.T.
