Star Wars: The Last Jedi Set To Pass $1 Billion At Global Box Office Before New Years

It looks like Star Wars: The Last Jedi is doing well. Returning to form as the second fastest-grossing film of all time, analysts predict that Lucasfilm's latest sequel trilogy installment will pass $1 billion at the global box office this weekend.

According to Variety, The Force Awakens sequel is set to cross $1 billion even before New Year hits this Monday. Back on Thursday the film raked in an additional $42.1 million, giving the film a total of $464.6 million at the domestic box office after a two-week run in cinemas. Right now the film is at $934.29 million at the global box office – just a little bit more and The Last Jedi could push its way above the $1 billion mark.

Though it seems like the film might not reach the $2.07 billion gross that The Force Awakens reached during its cinematic run, it's more than likely that The Last Jedi will move up and beyond the $1.06 billion that Rogue One: A Star WarsStory grossed last year.

For what it's worth, it seems like The Last Jedi is doing pretty well despite its divisiveness. While the film has been bathing in overwhelmingly positive critic reviews, there are fans that feel very upset with the direction the film is taking the franchise to because they're uncomfortable with the changes that director Rian Johnson's made to the Star Wars lore.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is currently screening in cinemas.
