Star Wars Products Pull Up Canadian Toy Sales

The interest in Star Wars merchandise is far from waning—and this is particularly the case in Canada.

A new report from Financial Post confirmed that sales from Star Wars merchandise has boosted overall toy sales, increasing it by 6% last year. This amounted to $2 billion in toy sales, still quite the rise from $1.9 billion. It should be noted that last year's movie had been Rogue One, a fairly less popular movie compared to all the others in the franchise.

According to NPD Canada's Michelle Liem, a toy industry analyst, the trend of entertainment properties tied with movies covers as much as a third of toy sales, which brings partnerships with studios even more fruitful.

"Kids want to replay the experience of their favorite movie or characters or TV show, and when they see the toy in the store that excites them, because they can really role play through it and extend the experience of the content."

Among the companies that enjoy this deal include LEGO and Hasbro. The Star Wars franchise has been on the rise for its LEGO building counterpart, with both kids and kids at heart seeing the joy in re-building their favorite spaceships from the movies.

Similarly, Hasbro has also enjoyed the attention with its array of action figures for the many characters featured in both old and new movies. Looks like we'll be seeing more toys and merchandise from the franchise, especially with Star Wars: The Last Jedi just around the corner with its Dec. 15 release date.
