Star Wars Effects Artists Talks About The Crait Battle In Star Wars: The Last Jedi

The Star Wars franchise has always been chock-full of epic fight scenes and Star Wars: The Last Jedi's been teasing another epic showdown between the First Order and the Resistance on the mineral-rich planet of Crait.

Sitting down with StarWars.com, Supervising Technical Director David Weitzeberg talked about his role in The Last Jedi's production, discussing the different ways Industrial Light & Magic pushes the film's battle sequences to new levels.

"I worked on several shots in the Battle of Crait," Weitzberg explained. "You can see Crait in the trailer but I didn't work directly on any of those shots. There's one shot, kind of from behind that's very similar to a shot that I worked on. My team did the speeder trails and the explosions whenever anything hits the ground."

The technical director also goes on to elaborate on how much technology's helped bring Star Wars' epic battles to life, saying that the evolution of technology has helped the team achieve more complicated simulations.

"Back then, the tools weren't as refined as they are now and so we really were creating what we needed on the fly. As the technology has evolved, we're able to do much more complicated simulations now," said Weitzberg. "There can still be a lot of programming but there has also been a lot of software developed that lets artists focus on making their work look good without worrying so much about the technical aspects of how do you do it."

Of course, a lot of the processes in the development of special effects has remained the same, giving fans the same nostalgic feel of the franchise.

"A lot of the processes are the same. You don't want to reinvent the wheel, but part of the fun, I think, of working in this industry is every project has its own challenges," the technical director went on to say.

Aside from the all the soap opera fantasy drama offered in the franchise, Star Wars fans stick around for the epic space and land battles, and we can't wait to watch things explode in The Last Jedi.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi makes its big premiere on December 15, 2017.
