Spider-Man Homecoming Writers On Why Spidey Refused To Join The Avengers

[THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING]

The entire plot of Spider-Man: Homecoming had Peter Parker trying to prove himself as an Avenger, and by the end of the movie, Tony Stark invites him to be an official member—only to have Spider-Man refuse and stay on his own turf. So what gives?

In an interview with THR, writer Jonathan Goldstein explains Peter Parker's decision:

"It's part of the overall arc for where Peter is in learning that he doesn't need the suit to be a hero, nor does he need membership in the Avengers to be a hero. He is his own guy, and the ultimate embrace of that is turning down an offer from Tony Stark."

I really liked the ending, and though I thought the reveal of the new suit in the end was cool, I wasn't ready for Spidey to have a drastic makeover all of a sudden. Plus, I'm thinking his decision was sort of influenced by the Vulture, who told him about trying to stand up for the little guy.

I don't know about you, but to me, Homecoming was a coming-of-age film. You can really relate to Peter when he tries his best to be Spider-Man as much as he can be, and by the end of the movie, he's fully realized on who he wants to be for himself. He's Spider-Man not because he wants to impress Tony Stark or be an Avenger. He's Spider-Man because… that's who he is? I lost my message there. Anyway, self-empowerment!

Spider-Man: Homecoming is currently out in theaters.
