LeBron James not only dominated the court; he also lorded over the box office as he slams on Black Widow with the film Space Jam: A New Legacy. The family film set a record during the pandemic era of a staggering $31.6M during its opening weekend in North America.

The live-action/animated basketball film of LeBron James, Space Jam: A New Legacy, is a sequel to that of Michael Jordan in 1996. Despite the movie having poor reviews, it proved its success through the box office scoring $31.6M on top of the $26.3M of Black Widow on its second weekend in theaters. A possible reason for this is the strategy of Disney offering the movie on their Premier Access.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Black Widowranks way below other Marvel Cinematic Universe releases of Disney, and not having the film released in China affected its box office record as such is a vital market for Hollywood.

As for Space Jam: A New Legacy, it also faced some backlash as it had tons of product placements on HBO Max and the issue on the desexualization of Lola Bunny, a prominent character in the film. Some critics were not sold on the plot of the film having James team up with Bugs Bunny and the Looney Tunes to save his son from an algorithm, Al G Rhythm, portrayed by Don Cheadle.

Still, the film managed to break through the ceiling and proved to be a blockbuster hit especially in time of a global pandemic.

Space Jam: A New Legacy is currently in theaters and on HBO Max. Black Widow is also available in cinemas and on Disney Plus Premier Access.
