There are many positives about Sonny Boy and its music is one of them. The opening and closing songs are one and the same, but you don't need another; the lyrics and overall style perfectly capture the aesthetic, from the students' frustration at being abandoned, to their complex feelings about each other.

The original studio Madhouse 12-episode anime will keep you guessing, possibly until the very last moment. Although, strictly speaking, it falls within the isekai genre, with 36-students transported to another dimension, it completely redefines the genre, as the new world is dystopian and absurd rather than magical.

The show airs weekly on Funimation, and has no dub to this day, though this could change in the future. If the opening/closing song is stuck in your head all week until the new episode comes, here's everything you need to know:

Sonny Boy Opening Theme Song Title

The opening theme song of Sonny Boy is titled "Shounen Shoujo " or "Boys Girls." Not the most impressive of titles, but this is an anime about 36 boys and girls adrift in another dimension. The simple title reflects the show's sometimes minimalistic tendencies.

Sonny Boy Opening Theme Lyrics

The English lyrics of "Shounen Shoujo" are available for you to read in the large anime song database animesonglyrics.com.

I hate that I love you Without knowing what Love means At the edge of the world where the sun sets We hold our hands With a train that travels through 2000 lightyears When he goes over his sorrow A boy meets a girl Beautiful loners With all of the good and bad A boy meets a girl source: https://www.animesonglyrics.com/sonny-boy/shounen-shoujo

This is a very dynamic song that will surely stick with you if you listen to it a couple of times. I might be reading too much into it, but I feel that the lyrics partly reflect the relationship between Mizuho and Nagara. In the most recent episode, Mizuho seems to have feelings for him that she can barely understand herself.

The lyrics seem to be about misfits, and about journeying in unknown surroundings, where "God is nowhere to be found." Combining dystopian isekai elements with the more mundane topic of high school love is really the best thing that the theme song of Sonny Boy could do.

Sonny Boy Opening Theme Artists

"Shounen Shoujo" is performed by GING NANG BOYZ, a Japanese punk-rock band led by Kazunobu Mineta. While other members have been part of the band at different times, GING NANG BOYZ is a solo project by Mineta at the time of writing.
