As gamers around the world first try to boot up Diablo 2: Resurrected, many are discovering there's some issue stopping them from loading in. Depending on your personal situation and your platform, your exact problem may vary, but these can present in a number of ways.

On Xbox, there's a "Failed to Authenticate'' error going around, and players across platforms are reporting crashes, being kicked out of games, or simply failing to connect. However, the most common error message displayed for gamers right now is "An issue while communicating with the game server. Please check that you are connected to the internet and try again."

This error makes it sound like it means there's something wrong with your home network or personal internet connection, but that's actually not the case as Diablo 2 is just going live. This kind of error normally means there's an issue with your personal connection you should try to fix by perhaps restarting your router or your computer, but when you get this error during periods of high in-game activity and your internet is otherwise acting normally, this is likely a server problem.

As many more people than normal are accessing Blizzard's servers, this can cause slowdown and outages as the servers struggle under the unusual load. This is good news in the sense that you don't have a problem unique to your setup you have to address, but it also means there isn't anything you can personally do to fix it.

Keep trying to connect, and eventually, the issue will go away once Blizzard manages to fix their server issues. A good way to check if people are still having trouble connecting is to check Twitter: People will post about their experience trying to play the game, and chances are they'll start posting about the issue going away when it finally does.

You may have some luck restarting your computer or console, your router, your game, or the Battle.net client on PC, but as we've discussed, these are server issues affecting many players out there. Unless Blizzard addresses the problem themselves, unless people give up on playing, the problem isn't likely to go away by itself.

While this may sound frustrating to players who pre-ordered and planned on playing the game at launch, these kids on day one server problems are extremely common. Sometimes they can be prolonged and catastrophic, but most of the time they're addressed in a reasonable timeframe, and gamers can manage to start playing a little while after they planned to start.

Diablo 3 had widespread, serious launch issues that didn't just keep many gamers out of the game on launch day, but core features of the game had major problems, too. A lot has changed for Blizzard since then, but in the wake of botched game releases and endless controversy and scandal, Blizzard's reputation is pretty much at an all-time low. So, while one would hope the company has learned from Diablo 3, Diablo 2: Resurrected's launch isn't guaranteed to be smooth sailing.
