Call of Duty: Vanguard has been confirmed to have destructible environments in its campaign, zombies mode, and multiplayer as a core gameplay mechanic. Players were able to experience this mechanic firsthand in the Vanguard Alpha that ran in late August for PlayStation players. But if you haven't had the chance to jump into Vanguard yet or simply want to know how this system works in-game, in this article we'll tell you everything you need to know.

Call of Duty games of the past have flirted with destruction before, like in Call of Duty: Ghosts with that game's dynamic maps players weren't too fond of, and in every Call of Duty there's some destructibility to environments. Bottles can get shot off a shelf. Plates can break. That kind of thing. Plus, Call of Duty has long since had bullet penetration, allowing certain guns to shoot through certain cover.

Vanguard takes destruction to a whole other level, but it's much less than Call of Duty's historic, destruction-obsessed rival: Battlefield. In Battlefield, entire buildings can be razed to the ground. Huge holes can be torn into most walls. In Battlefield, the maps are truly ever-changing.

This is not how the system works in Vanguard. Vanguard works much more similar to a game like Rainbow Six Siege. In Rainbow, players can shoot through and destroy certain elements of each map to create sightlines and take out enemy players. But the maps in Rainbow can't be completely destroyed like in Battlefield.

Vanguard's destructible environments work very similarly. Each map will have certain spaces where wooden boards, windows, or other features of the map can be either partially or fully destroyed, but that's all there is for destruction.

Though, while doors (something of a controversial feature in the Call of Duty community so much so that they were removed in Black Ops Cold War) are returning in Vanguard, they will also be one of the destructible features of each map.

Like how sprinting through a door in Vanguard automatically opens the door, sprinting through destructible cover like wooden boards will destroy the cover. However, as seen in Vanguard's Alpha, this system still needs tweaking. Sometimes, running into a destructible feature will only create a small hole in the wall or will simply stop your character dead in their tracks.

Destructible cover in Vanguard also ties into the game's changes to the weapon mounting system introduced in the Modern Warfare reboot. In Vanguard, when mounted you can move along the cover while mounted, which you couldn't do in Modern Warfare.

Because mounting spots are much more dynamic with destructible cover, being able to move along stuff you've partially destroyed to get a good sightline or simply keep an errant wooden board out of view becomes much more necessary.
