Rogue One Probably Won't Have An Opening Credits Crawl, Here's Why

Kathleen Kennedy has stated that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story probably won't have the iconic opening credits crawl of other Star Wars movies, ET Online reports. Kennedy revealed this fact during Gwendoline Christie moderated-panel on the first day of the Star WarsCelebration last Friday. "You know, we're in the midst of talking about it, but I don't think these films will have an opening crawl," Star Wars producer and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said.

Rogue One director Gareth Edwards attributed the possibility of the credits crawl being left out to the idea that Rogue One: A Star Wars story is supposed to be "different" from the films in the main saga. However, he was less decisive about the possibility of no credits crawl, saying, "I think basically there's a lot of things that I probably can't talk about, is probably the safest way to answer that," when askes about it. He went on to say "The idea is this film is supposed to be different than the saga films...the whole crawl of it all -- it's funny people are fascinated on that."

Gareth gave another reason, too. He said that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was based off the information given in the opening crawl of a Star Wars: A New Hope. "This film is born out of a crawl. The thing that inspired this movie was a crawl and what was written in that," he said. "There's this feeling that if we did a crawl, then it'll create another movie. And so the honest answer is you'll have to wait and see."

Kathleen Kennedy said that they sort of "telegraphed" the movie's lack of opening crawl at the beginning of the Star Wars Celebration event. She is referring to the bit of footage that sort of burst through the flickering A New Hope credits crawl to reveal the title for Rogue One. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will premiere December 16, 2016.
