RoboCop Reboot Nabs District 9 Director Neil Blomkamp

It looks like MGM really is pushing through with that rumored RoboCop reboot.

Earlier this year, 1987 RoboCop writer Ed Neumeier told publications that he was working on a new RoboCop movie. Though the screenwriter and producer couldn't offer that much information during the time, he did say that the studio was working on the film and that the reboot would be a continuation of the very first RoboCop movie.

Now, according to a report by Deadline, MGM's finally found its director for the project, nabbing District 9's Neill Blomkamp to direct the film.

Here's a short description of the RoboCop reboot's plot:

Anarchy reigns and the fate of Detroit hangs in the balance as RoboCop makes his triumphant return to fight crime and corruption.

Titled RoboCop Returns, the film is set to be produced and executive produced by Neumeier and Michael Miner respectively, officially marking the first time the two have returned to the RoboCop franchise since the original film premiered in the 1980s.

MGM tried to bring RoboCop to the big screen back in 2014, however, the reboot starring Joel Kinnaman didn't do so well with fans or with critics, and the film flopped at the box office. However, despite its poor performance, it seems like the studio still has high hopes for the franchise and is going with a script by Neumeier and Miner to be rewritten by Terminator screenwriter Justin Rhodes.

RoboCop Returns doesn't have a release date yet but we'll update everyone as soon as we get word.
