Rainn Wilson Talks About Playing Harry Mudd In Star Trek: Discovery

Star Trek: Discovery brought in a few returning characters from Star Trek: The Original Series, and one of the more prominent returns was the criminal and con star Harry Mudd.

First played by Roger C. Carmel in The Original Series, the role was passed on to The Office's Rainn Wilson in Discovery. Speaking in a new video by CBS, Rain opens up about how he landed the role.

"I love the character of Harry Mudd," Wilson opens up. "I remember him so distinctly from seeing him at age 7, so the idea of resurrecting that character, retooling him, reinventing him, rebooting him was just a dream come true."

It was Wilson's love of Mudd that helped him land the gig.

"Sure enough, it paid of great because five months later I just got a phone call and they're like, ‘Hey, do you want to play Harry Mudd in a couple episodes?' and I was like ‘Hells yeah,'" the actor recalled.

It doesn't sound strange why Wilson got the role, seeing how familiar he is with the character. However, it seems like Wilson just really loves the scoundrel so much – he wants the character to get his own spinoff series.

"This is what I would like to see in season two, episode four or so: They bump into Mudd, he's got a merchant ship, he's got a crazy crew on the merchant ship, and he's getting into all kinds of trouble traveling around the galaxy trying to do little dealsm," said Wilson. "And, boom! We've set ourselves up for a spin-off show. The Harry Mudd spin-off show. That would be my ideal."

Now that's what you call a true-blue Harry Mudd fan.

Star Trek Discovery is set to return with its second season on CBS All Access on January 7, 2018.
