Is Anime Popular in America?

As anime continued to spread around the globe, it won't be a surprise if it reached America. During that time, Americans were already exposed to comic-book-style stories. So when Japanese anime reached Americans, they were not really surprised about it.

Those living in America, however, treated Japanese anime as something only kids would enjoy. The anime market was children even if the purpose is to attract a bigger audience. Pokemon paved the way for teenagers and some adults to take interest in anime. Those who are fans of anime are regarded as otaku. Not everyone accepted otakus at first, and they were perceived as eccentric and odd. Is the status still the same even today?

Other than the fact that anime was targeted at children before, Americans also had issues with how female characters are made in anime. They believe that women are hypersexualized, and they didn't want their children to be exposed to sexualized cartoons.

But the case is different nowadays. Americans are more open to the genre, even celebrities can proudly say that they are into anime like Kim Kardashian. There are also anime movies that are shown in cinemas like Demon Slayer: Mugen Train. Other popular anime that fans are watching is Wonder Egg Priority, Sk8 the Infinity, and Jujutsu Kaisen.

With these, we can say that anime is popular in America. Fans can easily watch their preferred anime through popular streaming sites like Netflix, Crunchyroll, and Funimation. All shows have English subtitles, and there are those that were dubbed in English.

Anime is truly a new way for people to enjoy and relax. There are different genres to explore and to choose from. Some of these are seinen, isekai, shoujo, and shonen. With a wide variety like this, anime can easily cater to a wide range of people. It will no longer be just for children as there are far more genres that adults will find entertaining.

Since anime has been more accessible to Americans, it is expected that it will become more popular in the future. This will also encourage animators not only in Japan but also in America to make shows diverse and fun for a wide range of audiences.
