Watchmen Creator Alan Moore Shades Superhero Films, Claims They 'Blighted' Comic Culture

There is little doubt that comic book movies are huge blockbusters these days. Although this is a good thing for studios producing such films, Alan Moore isn't exactly pleased with what these superhero movies have done with culture. The Watchmen creator just threw shade at major comic book films claiming that they have "blighted" cinema as well as culture.

Moore recently spoke to Deadline where he expressed his concern for the popularity of comic book films.

"Most people equate comics with superhero movies now," Moore said. "That adds another layer of difficulty for me. I haven't seen a superhero movie since the first Tim Burton Batman film. They have blighted cinema, and also blighted culture to a degree."

Interestingly, Moore continued by pointing out how comic book movies seem like a form of escape for people.

"Several years ago I said I thought it was a really worrying sign, that hundreds of thousands of adults were queuing up to see characters that were created 50 years ago to entertain 12-year-old boys. That seemed to speak to some kind of longing to escape from the complexities of the modern world, and go back to a nostalgic, remembered childhood. That seemed dangerous, it was infantilizing the population," he said.

It's an interesting point although most fans of Marvel and DC films will probably disagree with Moore. Either way, superhero films are expected to continue drawing in audiences by the millions once theaters start opening again soon.
