He wasn't kidding when he said, "I'll be back." The Terminator will be returning but this time, it's in an anime series that will air on Netflix.
Netflix announced the new series which will follow the continuing battle of man against machines. Mattson Tomlin, who had previously penned the streaming giant's Project Power, has been confirmed as showrunner.
Tomlin shared his excitement about the upcoming project.
“Anyone who knows my writing knows I believe in taking big swings and going for the heart. I’m honored that Netflix and Skydance have given me the opportunity to approach Terminator in a way that breaks conventions, subverts expectations and has real guts,” Tomlin said in a statement.
Netflix Vice President of Japan & Anime John Derderian shared Tomlin's enthusiasm for the new project.
“Terminator is one of the most iconic sci-fi stories ever created—and has only grown more relevant to our world over time. The new animated series will explore this universe in a way that has never been done before. We can’t wait for fans to experience this amazing new chapter in the epic battle between machines and humans,” Derderian said.
But will the anime series feature any of the original characters from the Terminator films? For now, that has yet to be confirmed. However, there are speculations that the Netflix show will introduce new characters for a change. Nevertheless, there is a possibility that we'll still get to see the iconic robot played by Arnold Schwarzenegger.
The Terminator franchise was created by James Cameron and Gale Anne Hurd starting with the 1984 film. Since then, there have been five more movies, the latest of which is Terminator: Dark Fate. The franchise also had a live-action TV show focusing on Sarah Connor and two webseries.
The Terminator anime series has not yet been given an official release date. Stay tuned for more updates on this story.
