The Falcon and The Winter Soldier Showrunner Explains Shocking Ending

Fans who tuned in to the first episode of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier were undoubtedly shocked by how the premiere episode ended. After all, nobody was expecting a major plot twist so early in the Marvel Cinematic Universe series. However, Malcolm Spellman gave an interesting explanation on why New World Order concluded the way it did.

MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD, PROCEED WITH CAUTION!

In The Falcon and The Winter Soldier Episode 1, Sam Wilson struggles with the idea of becoming the next Captain America. After an encounter with Batroc the Leaper and the LAF terrorist group, Sam decides to surrender the shield to the US government so it could be displayed in a museum.

However, the government clearly had other plans for the shield. By the end of the episode, Sam discovers that the shield has been handed over to a man named John Walker, who was declared the new Captain America.

The revelation was a surprise for fans but Sam appeared to be expecting it to happen. So what's with Sam's reaction? Spellman told TVLine that Sam knew it would happen because of who he is.

"Being a Black man, he knows how he's viewed and he knows the electricity that would come from him carrying those stars and stripes. You meet his family, and [they] already have opinions on it — you're hearing some of it in-jokes, but it's very pointed," Spellman said.

Spellman, who also serves as head writer on the series, further pointed out that what happened should have been expected by everyone including Sam.

"A Black man being betrayed by his country I don't think is a surprising thing to Sam or any of our viewers, but it is powerful because it gets to the heart of Sam's doubt," Spellman said. "And how he copes with that doubt over the series is going to determine who he is moving forward in the MCU."

At this point, we can expect Sam to be moving forward cautiously considering that he and Bucky Barnes have both gone up against the government before. Nevertheless, it's something that we are truly looking forward to in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.

The first episode of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is now streaming on Disney+.
