It looks like all of your favorite Studio Ghibli films will actually be available on a streaming service soon. HBO has just confirmed that all 21 of the animated movies will stream on its upcoming service, HBO Max.
The announcement was made by HBO, confirming that they have made a landmark deal with GKids, which owns the North American distribution of Studio Ghibli's collection (via Polygon). This means that you can finally stream your favorite Hayao Miyazaki films like Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and My Neighbor Totoro on HBO Max when it launches in 2020.
Kevin Reilly, Chief Content Officer of HBO Max, expressed pride over having the change to bring the animated classics to the streaming platform
"Studio Ghibli films are visually breathtaking, completely immersive experiences," Reilly said in a statement. "Exciting, enchanting, and deeply humanistic, these wonderful films have captured people's hearts around the world, and we are proud to showcase them in an accessible way for even more fans through HBO Max."
Koji Hoshino, chairman of Studio Ghibli, also released a statement about the new partnership
"We are excited to be working with HBO Max to bring the complete collection of Studio Ghibli films to streaming audiences in the US. As a premium content brand, HBO Max is an ideal home for our films," Hoshino said. "Upon launch of the service this spring, existing Ghibli fans will be able to enjoy their favorites and delve deeper into the library, while whole new audiences will be able to discover our films for the first time."
It was previously reported that Studio Ghibli films will not be made available on Disney+ or any streaming service. Nevertheless, we're glad that the decision has been changed and the Miyazaki movies will soon be available for streaming.
HBO Max will launch in Spring 2020.
