There is little doubt that the Star Wars: The Last Jedi backlash could have been overwhelming for most of the people involved in the film. However, director Rian Johnson has taken it all in stride. In fact, the filmmaker claims all those negative comments helped him in making his new movie Knives Out.

Johnson recently spoke to Deadline about the upcoming film, which features a character who likes to post alt-right hate speech on social media. The Looper director admitted that the character was inspired by all the angry comments about The Last Jedi.

“Anyone who’s on Twitter these days, God bless you because it’s rough waters out there, but there’s also wonderful stuff about it,” Johnson said. “That’s why we’re all still on it I guess. That’s one of the things [Knives Out] engages with, the current state of online culture. Whether you made a Star Wars movie or you have a cooking show, whatever you’re doing on there, someone’s going to be screaming at you about it probably. Let’s put it on a screen in a way we can all maybe have a laugh about it.”

That's a surprisingly positive reaction to all that negativity and we can't help but appreciate the way he views the TLJ backlash. Interestingly, it appears to be working for Johnson, who is still expected to work on a new Star Wars trilogy. For now, he hasn't received any updates from Lucasfilm but assures fans that his new movies have not been cancelled.

Knives Out is scheduled for release on November 27.
