Star Wars: Rogue Squadron Set to be Loose Rogue One Sequel

In case you missed it, Disney and Lucasfilm have confirmed a new Star Wars film Rogue Squadron which will be directed by Wonder Woman 1984 director Patty Jenkins. But what can we expect from this new project? There's a huge chance that it will serve as a sequel to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Star Wars fans already know that Rogue Squadron is a part of the original trilogy films, having been introduced in The Empire Strikes Back where they were led by Luke Skywalker. The Rogue Group would later appear extensively in the Expanded Universe. Sadly, all the things we know about the squadron were basically erased after Disney acquired Lucasfilm.

Interestingly, the Rogue Squadron got a new origin story after the release of Rogue One. In the comic book Star Wars #52, it was revealed that Luke had actually named the group after Jyn Erso and her companions. Jyn's name was even dropped by Luke himself in the comics while talking to Wedge Antilles.

So could this mean that Rogue Squadron is the sequel to Rogue One? Jenkins has already confirmed that the film will be an original story with no previous ties to the books or games. Nevertheless, there is a good chance that the movie will still pay tribute to Jyn and the Rebels who sacrificed themselves to destroy the Galactic Empire.

There are no other names attached to Rogue Squadron yet nor does it have an official production start date. However, it is already scheduled for release on December 22, 2023.
