There is little doubt that every member of the Ghost crew had gone through a lot in the four seasons of Star Wars Rebels. However, it looks like we almost lost one of the most important characters in the animated series as early as Season 2.
Freddie Prinze Jr. recently spoke to Collider while promoting the Punky Brewster revival. During the interview, the She's All That actor admitted that the episode Trials of the Darksaber was his favorite Star Wars Rebels episode. Additionally, he revealed that executive producer Dave Filoni had a shocking plan for Kanan Jarrus in a different episode.
“Dave and I talked about me dying at Maul’s hand, at the end of Season 2, but then the same people who didn’t want me for the project suddenly said, 'No, he can’t die. He has to be in every episode.' So, I guess I won them over, at some point,” Prinze said.
In Twilight of the Apprentice, Ezra Bridger finds Darth Maul on Malachor and the former Sith lord offers to help him recover a Sith holocron. Kanan is initially hesitant to work with Maul and he is later proven right when the villain betrays the team. In the process, Maul blinds Kanan with his lightsaber.
It's interesting to note that Kanan almost died at Maul's hand early in Rebels. After all, this could change the way Ezra finds his way in the series. On the other hand, we're grateful that Filoni agreed that the character needed to live until the final season.
While we probably won't see Kanan return in the Star Wars Universe anytime soon, there's a possibility that his ward could appear in a new series. There have been speculations that Ezra will be one of the main characters in the Ahsoka Tano series. Hopefully, we'll get to find out what happened to Ezra after the events in Rebels.
