Star Trek: Kate Mulgrew Reveals Why She Agreed to Return as Janeway in Prodigy

There is little doubt that Trekkies are thrilled about Kathryn Janeway's return in Star Trek: Prodigy. But what convinced Kate Mulgrew to reprise her role from Star Trek Voyager? Mulgrew revealed that it had a lot to do with reaching new audiences.

Mulgrew recently spoke to CBR where she was asked why she agreed to work on an animated series. Interestingly, the veteran actress admitted that it had a lot to do with Janeway always been a part of her no matter what she does.

"She's always present in my life," Mulgrew said. "Not a day goes by where I don't have some reminder or request about Janeway or something to do with the future of Janeway."

Mulgrew then admitted that she was "curious" and "slightly bewildered" when Alex Kurtzman proposed that she would work on the animated show.

"It was explained to me in detail and I thought to myself 'Wow, this will be terrific to bring this to young people who may be watching this with their mothers who watched me as Captain Janeway in live-action and it will bring the entire family into the orbit of Star Trek and this is something that I very much want to do,'" she stated.

That's not the only reason why Mulgrew wanted to do the upcoming series. "Also, I love to use my voice, I love the solitude of the recording booth; I love the freedom of it. Star Trek truly is the gift that keeps on giving," she confessed.

Star Trek: Prodigy will feature six new alien characters who will make up the crew of Prodigy as they set off on an adventure that leads them to Starfleet. We're expecting Janeway to be one of the captains they encounter along the way.

Star Trek: Prodigy has not yet been given an official release date. Stay tuned for more updates on this story.
