Shang-Chi's Simu Liu Protects an Elvish Bright in Netflix's Bright Anime Trailer

It looks like Shang-Chi isn't the only warrior that Simu Liu is playing this year. The first trailer for the Bright anime spin-off Bright: Samurai Soul offers our first glimpse at Liu's Izuo as he protects an elvish Bright.

The Bright anime film was announced back in June. However, the spin-off doesn't feature the characters from the original film. Instead, Samurai Soul is set at the end of Japan's Shogunate era but still features a human, an orc, and an elf.

Liu's character is Izuo, a one-eyed samurai who is recruited by an elf named Sonya (Yuzu Harada) to work as her bodyguard. They are joined by the orc named Raiden (Frank Mancuso) as they flee from the Inferni who are trying to obtain Sonya's wand.

Sounds familiar? The plot is pretty much the same as the 2017 film starring Will Smith and Joel Edgerton. However, there are interesting new characters in Samurai Soul and we'll have to wait and see just how different it could be from the live-action movie.

The official synopsis for Bright: Samurai Soul reads as follows:

"In the time between the fall of the Shogunate and the rise of the Meiji era, a powerful bright light emitted from a wand brings an end to the long Shogunate period to avoid further bloodshed as Japan begins to shift toward a new era. Amid these circumstances, a one-eyed wandering ronin named Izou, who has lost his reason to live, and Raiden, an orc who detests murder and hopes to leave a life of thievery behind, separately meet a young elf girl named Sonya around the same time.
"Together, they go on a journey along the Tokaido road to bring her and the wand she holds safely to the land of the elves in the north. Standing in their path is the mysterious organization Inferni, which aims to obtain the wand and revive the Dark Lord, who intends to rule all of creation.
"Inferni also uses the new Meiji government in its attempt to steal the wand from Izou, Raiden and Sonya. Traveling along the Tokaido road from Kyoto to Yokohama, Izou and Raiden begin their journey to protect the wand."

Bright: Samurai Soul is directed by Kyōhei Ishiguro and written by Michiko Yokote. The anime film will premiere on Netflix on October 12, 2021.
