Shang-Chi Director Explains Abomination's New Look in Legend of the Ten Rings

We already know that Abomination will show up in Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings. After all, Kevin Feige himself confirmed that the Hulk's constant adversary was the mysterious character that appeared in the film's first trailer. But why does Emil Blonsky look so different in the new Marvel Cinematic Universe flick? Destin Daniel Cretton offered an explanation of the villain's new looks.

Blonsky first appeared in The Incredible Hulk back in 2008 where he was played by Tim Roth. Since then, the character was not returned to the MCU while Edward Norton's Bruce Banner has been recast with Mark Ruffalo. Luckily, Abomination is set for his major MCU comeback this year.

So why does Abomination look more green in the Shang-Chi trailer? Cretton discussed the change in an interview with Fandango, stating that Blonsky has gone through a lot since we last saw him.

"I think Abomination got a bit of an upgrade… or we might call it an evolution going through time," Cretton said. He also admitted that he is thrilled to get the chance to bring Blonsky back to the MCU.

"I do really love the design that we landed on for that character," Cretton said. "He's big and scary and looks really cool. I can't really say anything about Abomination."

Cretton's last comment is intriguing considering that we're expecting Abomination to appear briefly in Shang-Chi. However, if the director is keeping things quiet about the character's appearance, there's a possibility that Blonsky is playing a bigger role in the film. On the other hand, Cretton might be choosing to mislead us with the statement.

Roth will reprise his role as Abomination in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The film also stars Simu Liu, Awkwafina, Tony Leung, Meng'er Zhang, Fala Chen, Florian Munteanu, Benedict Wong, and Michelle Yeoh.

Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings hits theaters on September 3, 2021.
