There is little doubt that Awkwafina is playing an important role in Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings. When her casting was first confirmed during SDCC 2019, her character was kept secret.
Since then, it has been revealed that the Crazy Rich Asians star will portray Katy, a good friend of Simu Liu's character. However, the new clip for the Marvel Cinematic Universe film seems to suggest that she is not just an innocent bystander.
It has already been established that Katy is a friend of Shang-Chi who is not aware of his past nor that his father Wenwu is the leader of the Ten Rings. In the trailers, she is shown tagging along with Shang-Chi on his adventures and has to be saved a few times as well.
But is it possible that Katy might be more than just a sidekick to Shang-Chi? The new clip titled Scaffolding Escape shows Katy and Shang-Chi being chased on the side of a building. When the bad guys start to catch up to them, Shang-Chi tells Katy to keep going while he buys her more time.
It might seem like Shang-Chi is just making sure his friend doesn't have to deal with the bad guys and escapes safely. However, there are speculations that Katy is the one who is being chased and Shang-Chi needs to protect her.
Katy's identity could be more mysterious than expected and it would be interesting to see if she is connected to a comic book character. However, we might need to wait until the premiere of Shang-Chi to find out the truth.
Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings will premiere on September 3, 2021.
