Mortal Kombat Star Joe Taslim on Fighting Hiroyuki Sanada's Scorpion [EXCLUSIVE]

He might play a cold bad guy in Mortal Kombat but Joe Taslim is actually a cool dude. We spoke to the former judo champ who portrays Sub-Zero in the highly anticipated reboot and he opened up about working on the epic showdown between him and the future Scorpion.

Taslim was the first cast member to be announced for the Mortal Kombatreboot back in 2019 and fans were instantly excited about the new Sub-Zero. After all, the Star Trek Beyond actor has already proven that he's a formidable force on the big screen. Needless to say, Taslim confirmed that he and co-star Hiroyuki Sanada worked hard on one of the film's best sequences.

The trailer for the Mortal Kombat reboot already confirmed that we'll see Sub-Zero and Scorpion before they had their supernatural powers. Although the scene is mostly just hand-to-hand combat, Taslim told Epicstream that it took a long time to shoot the sequence.

"A lot of preparation, for sure," Taslim said, adding that he and Sanada didn't get to feel the "coolness" of doing those classic video game moves "with fire and ice." He explained that the scene brought them down to basics and simply had "warrior against another warrior."

"It took us quite a while with the prep. I trained a lot with Hiroyuki and it took us almost a week to shoot that," Taslim stated.

We are certainly excited about the full scene where Taslim's Bi-Han takes on Sanada's Hanzo Hasashi. Needless to say, it's going to be a sequence to watch out for when Mortal Kombat finally premieres later this month.

Mortal Kombat is directed by Simon McQuoid and also stars Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Ludi Lin, Josh Lawson, Mehcad Brooks, Tadanobu Asano, Max Huang, and Chin Han. The film will premiere in selected theaters and on HBO Max on April 23, 2021.
