Mortal Kombat Scores Flawless Victory over Demon Slayer Movie in Weekend Box Office

It's a flawless victory for Mortal Kombat. The latest film adaptation of the beloved video games has dominated the domestic weekend box office, narrowly defeating Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train in the battle for the top film.

Both Mortal Kombat and Mugen Train premiered on Friday, April 23. With that in mind, the two films have been pitted against each other to sell the most tickets on their opening weekend. It's an interesting competition considering that both movies were expected to do well despite being available in limited theaters.

Early on, people were expecting the Demon Slayer film to be the big winner. After all, the movie has already done so well internationally. In addition to that, Mugen Train has the advantage of being released exclusively in theaters while Mortal Kombat had been released digitally on HBO Max.

Amazingly, Mortal Kombat managed to pull off a flawless victory against the Demon Slayer movie. The reboot brought in $22 million on its opening weekend, defeating Mugen Train as the anime film earned $19 million.

Both movies did very well despite being released during the pandemic era. Exhibitor Relations Co. states that "this is the first time since the pandemic began that two films have grossed over $10M+ on the same weekend." With that in mind, it's still a major win for Mortal Kombat and Mugen Train.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train is now screening in the US. Mortal Kombat is also being shown in theaters worldwide and on HBO Max.
