It has been a long wait but it's finally here. The first official red-band trailer for the Mortal Kombat movie has arrived and it's as bloody as any fan has expected. In addition to that, we get to see more of the epic showdown between Sub-Zero and Scorpion.
The trailer opens with Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee) talking about how they came across the tournament. She confirms that she and Jax Briggs (Mehcad Brooks) were sent to Brazil to find a wanted fugitive only to realize that he has supernatural abilities. Unfortunately, the encounter leads to Jax losing his arms.
It is then revealed that Sonya is talking to Cole Young (Lewis Tan) who has just discovered that his mysterious birthmark is actually proof that he has been chosen to be part of Mortal Kombat. But can Cole and his new friends overcome the champions of Outworld to save everything he believes in?
The trailer also offers our first glimpse at the terrifying Mileena (Sisi Stringer) in action as well as a quick look at Goro. However, the best thing about the teaser might be the human version of Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada) taking on several baddies trying to sneak into his home as well as the icy showdown between the present-day Scorpion and Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim).
The synopsis for Mortal Kombat reads as follows:
“In Mortal Kombat, MMA fighter Cole Young, accustomed to taking a beating for money, is unaware of his heritage—or why Outworld's Emperor Shang Tsung has sent his best warrior, Sub-Zero, an otherworldly Cryomancer, to hunt Cole down. Fearing for his family's safety, Cole goes in search of Sonya Blade at the direction of Jax, a Special Forces Major who bears the same strange dragon marking Cole was born with.
“Soon, he finds himself at the temple of Lord Raiden, an Elder God and the protector of Earthrealm, who grants sanctuary to those who bear the mark. Here, Cole trains with experienced warriors Liu Kang, Kung Lao and rogue mercenary Kano, as he prepares to stand with Earth’s greatest champions against the enemies of Outworld in a high stakes battle for the universe.
“But will Cole be pushed hard enough to unlock his arcana—the immense power from within his soul—in time to save not only his family, but to stop Outworld once and for all?”
Mortal Kombat is directed by Simon McQuoid. The film will premiere in limited theaters and on HBO Max on April 16, 2021.
