Hajime Isayama Originally Wanted to Kill Levi in Attack on Titan

There is little doubt that the final chapter of the Attack on Titan manga had a lot of surprises for fans. However, it looks like Hajime Isayama had more shockers planned for Chapter 139. Amazingly, the manga creator had originally wanted to kill Levi Ackerman off before someone dissuaded him.

Attack on Titan Chapter 139 only had one major death but Shintaro Kawakubo revealed that Isayama was planning two. The editor confirmed in an interview that the mangaka initially admitted that he had wanted to kill Levi off in the final chapter.

"The opposite of what ending Levi got in the last chapter was an option at one point," Kawakubo said. "Isayama said it is okay to have a story where Levi dies."

Kawakubo added that he usually sits down for a meeting with Isayama whenever the mangaka is thinking about killing off a character. In Levi's case, Kawakubo disagreed with the idea.

"If a character's death is meaningful, then so be it. We try to figure out whether the death is meaningful from the story's perspective. In Levi's face, Isayama reconsidered his decision," Kawakubo said.

It's certainly a relief that the editor was able to get Isayama to reconsider Levi's death. Luckily, things worked out the way they did for Attack on Titan Chapter 139.

Although the manga is now over, fans can still catch up with Levi in the final season of the anime. Attack on Titan Season 4 Part 2 has not yet been given an official release date but is expected to premiere in Winter 2022.
