There is little doubt that people are still looking forward to the planned sequel to Jim Henson's Labyrinth. However, it looks like the upcoming film has come across a major speedbump. Fede Alvarez has just confirmed that he has left the highly anticipated project and he has a good reason for doing so.
Alvarez was recently a guest on the Boo Crewpodcast where he revealed that he decided not to work on Labyrinth 2 because he was being careful about the projects he works on.
"It's so hard to decide what's worth your time. And what's worth the attention of the audience," Alvarez said before explaining that he ultimately chose to turn his back on the fantasy sequel.
"Labyrinth was something I was going to do at some point, but then I stepped down. I just felt…when people have a preconceived notion of what something should be, it's very hard to succeed – to surprise them," he added. "They're just expecting the same thing again."
Sadly, these expectations forced Alvarez to give up on the sequel.
"So I just decided I didn't want to do things as a director that people knew already what it was. Or have a preconceived notion of how it should look on the screen. So Labyrinth would be something that people would judge that way, so I decided not to do it," he concluded.
Labyrinth originally starred Jennifer Connelly and the late David Bowie. For now, there haven't been any updates on the sequel. Stay tuned for more updates on this story.
