Dune Co-Writer Already Penned Sequel Treatment Ahead of Reboot's Premiere

There is little doubt that the delay of the Dune reboot has been disappointing for fans. However, there's a little bit of good news from Eric Roth, who co-wrote the script with director Denis Villeneuve. Roth confirmed that he had already penned a "treatment" for a second film that could be adapted in the future.

It's no secret that the upcoming Dune movie will only adapt the first part of the Frank Herbert book. This is something that has been confirmed by Villeneuve, who has every intention to work on a second movie.

So it's no surprise that Roth told Collider that he had actually written something that would adapt the full novel. "I [wrote] a treatment to show the estate what we could do with the second half, but I've got to tell you that I think I've done as much as I can do," he said.

Interestingly, Roth pointed out that he will not be working on the sequel if it does get greenlighted by the studio. Nevertheless, he's hoping that Villeneuve will manage.

"Hopefully people love Dune so much that they do want to have a second part, and I'm sure Denis would do an amazing version of that," Roth said.

For now, we might have to wait until after the premiere of Dune before Warner Bros. gives the sequel the greenlight. Let's hope that the first movie will turn out to be a huge box office success.

Dune is set to premiere in selected theaters and on HBO Max on October 1, 2021.
