There is little doubt that Whovians are already eager to get some hopeful updates on Doctor Who Season 13. Luckily, it looks like the upcoming season will finally begin production. On the other hand, COVID-19 has drastically reduced the episode count.
Showrunner Chris Chibnall has just confirmed that Doctor Who Season 13 will finally resume production and that every guideline and precaution to avoid the spread of COVID-19 will be followed on set. However, he also stated that the cast and crew will not have enough time to finish a full series.
"In this strangest of years, the Doctor Who production team have worked wonders to get the show back into production. We're thrilled to be back making the show," Chibnall said in a statement. He then revealed that the pandemic will still affect the series, at least when it comes to the number of episodes.
"Given the complexity of making Doctor Who, and with new and rigorous COVID working protocols, it's going to take us a little longer to film each episode, meaning we expect to end up with eight episodes, rather than the usual 11," Chibnall said.
The showrunner concluded his statement on a hopeful note.
"Rest assured, the ambition, humor, fun, and scares you expect from Doctor Who will all still be firmly in place. For everyone around the world, this is a challenging period—but the Doctor never shirks from a challenge!" Chibnall said.
Although it is disappointing to know that there will be fewer episodes in the upcoming season, we're still happy to know that Series 13 will not be delayed any further.
