There is little doubt that Whovians were thrilled when it was revealed that Jodie Whittaker will be playing the Thirteenth Doctor. Not surprisingly, Christopher Eccleston felt the same way and the former Doctor Who star shared his thoughts on what a female Doctor could mean for the franchise.

Back in 2017, it was confirmed that Whittaker will take over as the Thirteenth Doctor after Peter Capaldi. Thirteen first appeared in the Christmas special and this was followed by her first regular appearance in Doctor Who Season 11. Since then, people have had a lot to say about the female Doctor and Eccleston has his own opinion about the casting.

Eccleston recently spoke to Den of Geek where he pointed out that "it’s time for the Doctor to meet the Cyberwomen in the 21st century" since "we’ve had enough Cybermen." He expressed his interest in seeing the Time Lord meeting Emily Davison, pointing out that the Doctor is "very drawn to the feminine."

With that in mind, Eccleston then stated that Whittaker's casting is a welcome one.

“I think that it’s great that we now have a female Doctor, and I think we should take that further in the way that we look at history and look at it through a female lens. I think the [Ninth] Doctor would respond very well to that,” he said.

We're loving how Eccleston is supporting the idea of a female Doctor. We're also happy that he has decided to return as the Ninth Doctor, at least in audio form.

Eccleston returns in Doctor Who: The Ninth Doctor Adventures which is now available from Big Finish. Whittaker will return as the Thirteenth Doctor in Doctor Who Season 13, which is expected to premiere later this year.
