Denis Villeneuve Teases Dune: Part 2 Production Start

People are currently hyped up for Dune after the film finally had its world premiere at the Vienna International Film Festival on Friday. However, Denis Villeneuve only has eyes for the sci-fi franchise's future. The director has just admitted that he's already getting ready to begin work on Dune: Part 2 next year.

Everyone knows about Villeneuve's plans for the Dune reboot. The Blade Runner 2049 director has repeatedly stated he is intent on working on three movies to truly adapt Frank Herbert's masterpiece. So it's no surprise that Villeneuve is preparing to work on the next film even before its public release.

Villeneuve recently took part in a roundtable Q&A where io9 asked how soon the Dune sequel will be released. Interestingly, the filmmaker says it's happening very very soon.

"I would say that I would be fairly ready to go quite quickly now," Villeneuve said. He then explained that you shouldn't expect it right away.

"Quickly in [terms of] a movie of that size. You still need to make sets and costumes, we are talking about months," Villeneuve continued. He then teased that production could start by next year.

"If there's enthusiasm and the movie is greenlit, sooner than later I will say that I will be ready to shoot 2022 for sure...I am ready to go and I would say that I would love to bring it to the screen as soon as possible," Villeneuve concluded.

It's awesome to know that Villeneuve is determined to get started on Dune: Part 2 as soon as possible. After all, he has a grand plan for the sequel, revealing that the next film will be seen from Chani's point of view. Villeneuve had previously confirmed he intends for Zendaya's character to be the main protagonist in the second film, making the big switch from Timothee Chalamet's Paul Atreides.

Dune: Part One also stars Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, David Dastmalchian, Chang Chen, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem. The film will be released in theaters and on HBO Max on October 22, 2021.
